NYC parking meter rates going up to close coronavirus budget gap

New York drivers are the latest victim of the city’s $9 billion coronavirus  budget shortfall.

The Department of Transportation will raise second-hour parking meter rates this year in parts of the Big Apple, according to “citywide savings program” documents posted by the city Thursday afternoon.

City meters in Manhattan above 96th Street and in the outer boroughs currently charge a flat hourly rate, ranging from $1.25 to $2.50 depending on location.

It is not clear how much hourly rates will increase, but the city’s budget docs say the move will net municipal coffers $12.3 million over five years.

Metered parking in Manhattan between from 96th Street to 110th Street currently costs $2.50 per hour. Spots in outer borough “business districts” and “neighborhood retails districts” are $2 and $1.50 per hour, respectively.

All other metered spots cost $1.25 per hour.

DOT last increased parking meter prices in 2018, and before that in 2013.

City Hall and DOT did not immediately return a request for additional details.
