Trump administration tells Congress US is out of the WHO

The Trump administration on Tuesday officially withdrew the US from the World Health Organization, a senior administration official told The Post, breaking ties with the public health body as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spike around much of the world.

“The United States’ notice of withdrawal, effective July 6, 2021, has been submitted to the UN Secretary-General, who is the depository for the WHO,” the official said.

Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, tweeted that the administration informed Congress of the withdrawal.

“Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the WHO in the midst of a pandemic. To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice. This won’t protect American lives or interests — it leaves Americans sick & America alone,” Menendez wrote.

The administration has accused the WHO of bungling the outbreak of the virus, which has killed more than 132,000 Americans to date.
