Trump says he has a ‘very good relationship’ with Fauci despite Navarro’s scathing op-ed
President Trump said Wednesday he has a “very good relationship” with White House coronavirus task force member Anthony Fauci, despite an op-ed by one of his top advisers that trashed the immunologist.
Trump distanced himself from trade adviser Peter Navarro’s op-ed that said Fauci “has been wrong about everything.”
“I get along very well with Dr. Fauci,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “That’s Peter Navarro, but I have a very good relationship with Dr. Fauci.”
Navarro criticized Fauci for opposing early travel restrictions on China and accused him of “flip-flopping on the use of masks.”
On Wednesday morning, White House spokeswoman Alyssa Farah tweeted that Navarro’s op-ed “didn’t go through normal White House clearance processes and is the opinion of Peter alone.”
Fauci’s blunt assessment of coronavirus pandemic developments and his willingness to contradict Trump have made the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease a target for far-right critics.
Fauci said Monday that COVID-19 cases are surging because “we did not shut down entirely.”
On Monday, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany denied a Washington Post report that said reporters were given “opposition research” to discredit Fauci, including his past remarks early on in the pandemic that the public didn’t need to wear masks.
“There is no opposition research being dumped to reporters,” McEnany said. “We were asked a very specific question by the Washington Post, and that question was President Trump noted that Dr. Fauci had made some mistakes, and we provided a direct answer to what was a direct question.”
Trump summoned reporters to the Oval Office on Wednesday to speak about his administration’s efforts against the MS-13 gang. He spoke about Fauci in response to a reporter’s question.
“We will not allow these animals to terrorize our communities,” Trump said of MS-13. He praised the Justice Department’s pursuit of a death penalty verdict for “a bloodthirsty MS-13 leader.”
Trump said he would give an “exciting” news conference next week to address cities that have become “out of control” with crime and “like war zones.”
