Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accused the US of “savagery” Saturday for imposing sanctions that have caused Iranians $150 billion in damages. He also urged Iranians to aim their fury at the White House.
“With their illegal and inhuman sanctions, and terrorist actions, the Americans have inflicted $150 billion of damage on the people of Iran,” Rouhani said on Iranian state television.
“We haven’t seen such an extent of savagery … The address for Iranian people’s curses and hatred is the White House.”
The bad blood between Washington and Tehran has only gotten worse since President Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and started re-imposing sanctions.
In response, Iran has gradually breached some of the tenets of that deal, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA.)
Washington imposed new sanctions Monday on Iran’s defense ministry and its nuclear and weapons program. It also blacklisted several Iranian officials and entities over alleged gross violations of human rights.
