A 5-year-old boy was killed and his mother was critically injured in a Bronx apartment fire Monday morning, authorities said.
The blaze broke out on the fifth floor of the 15-story building in the Melrose Houses public housing complex on East 153rd Street near Morris Avenue in the Melrose neighborhood shortly before 10 a.m., according to the FDNY.
The young boy was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where he died of smoke inhalation. His 38-year-old mom was listed in critical condition at the same hospital, cops said.
The Post is withholding their names pending family notification of the boy’s death.
“That poor darlin’,” a fifth-floor neighbor in the building told The Post. “They brought him out so fast. No sound, no crying. I cried for him. I’m still crying for the poor angel.”
Two firefighters were also evaluated on scene for minor injuries, the FDNY said.
The fire was under control by around 10:15 a.m., and the cause is under investigation.
