Cam Newton’s bold fashion choices under attack after brutal Patriots performance

Fresh off his worst game in a Patriots uniform, Cam Newton drew the ire of former NFL QB Jeff Garcia, who was more worried about the 31-year-old’s flashy fashion sense than his mediocre play.

“You go into this game with two touchdowns, four interceptions, you threw what, three more interceptions?” Garcia, a former 49ers quarterback who’s now a studio analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area, began on his rant about Newton. “You get yanked in the second half, there’s nothing good going your way. Why are you dressing like that to bring more attention to yourself? I’d be trying to ask the equipment managers ‘Put me in your jock sock cart and sneak me in the back door and I’ll show up on the field and do the best that I can.'”

The San Francisco 49ers dismantled Newton and the Patriots 33-6 Sunday, with Newton throwing for 98 yards and a season-high three interceptions before he was replaced in the fourth quarter by backup Jarrett Stidham. The loss dropped the Patriots to 2-4.

NBC Sports Bay Area posted the initial clip to Twitter but has since deleted it.

“This just goes back to a couple years of just watching this guy and seeing him at the podium, but yet what he’s doing on the field does not translate to being that guy,” said Garcia, who played 11 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2010.

Appearing on WEEI on Monday, Newton said he agreed with Garcia’s stance on his fashion, but declared that he wouldn’t change anything.

“You know what’s crazy, I agree with him. … You know what, he’s exactly right, but I am not changing the way I dress,” Newton, who is known for his bold postgame fashion choices, said.

After the 2015 NFL MVP was compared to Hall of Famer Joe Namath, who used to sport fur coats before and after games, Garcia said: “When you predict you’re going to win a Super Bowl and you go out and do it, wear whatever the hell you want.”

Newton, who signed in New England this past offseason following Tom Brady’s departure, has recorded 969 passing yards in five games this season. He missed the Patriots’ loss to the Chiefs after testing positive for COVID-19.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told reporters Sunday after the loss that Newton remains the starter even though he was benched during the game.
