Kamala Harris laughs when asked if she’d bring ‘socialist’ perspective to White House

Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris burst into laughter when asked if she would bring a “socialist or progressive perspective” to the White House.

The moment happened during an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” released Sunday, when anchor Norah O’Donnell described California’s Harris as “the most liberal United States senator.”

Harris laughed and then attributed the “most liberal” title to Vice President Mike Pence, who she said referred to her as such during their vice presidential debate.

O’Donnell, however, said she was citing an analysis by the nonpartisan GovTrack organization and was not simply quoting Harris’ vice presidential opponent.

O’Donnell then rattled off a list of policy areas where Harris held far more progressive views than Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, including her support for legalizing marijuana, Medicare for all and the Green New Deal — all of which are opposed by the former vice president.

Harris was then asked if she would bring a progressive lens to an otherwise moderate Biden administration.

“What I will do, and I promise you this, and this is what Joe wants me to do, this was part of our deal, I will always share with him my lived experience as it relates to any issue that we confront. And I promised Joe that I will give him that perspective and always be honest with him,” the senator responded.

“And is that a socialist or progressive perspective?” O’Donnell asked.

“No, no,” Harris replied, immediately laughing again.

“It is the perspective of — of a woman who grew up — a black child in America, who was also a prosecutor, who also has a mother who arrived here at the age of 19 from India. Who also, you know, l — likes hip-hop. Like, what do you wanna know?” she continued, repeatedly laughing.

The CBS News anchor then asked Harris to address President Trump’s comments about her at the Republican National Convention in August, specifically when he said that the former vice president would be “nothing more than a Trojan horse for socialist policies.”

“I am not gonna be confined to Donald Trump’s definition of who I or anybody else is. And I think America has learned that that would be a mistake,” she told O’Donnell.

Pressed further on the matter, Harris told the Sunday news program, “I would not have joined the ticket if I didn’t support what Joe was proposing.”
