Odell Beckham injury dampens Baker Mayfield’s signature NFL moment
“A win is a win” in Baker Mayfield’s book.
On Sunday, the Browns quarterback celebrated Cleveland’s 37-34 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, dedicating the victory to receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who exited the game with a major knee injury, revealed Monday to be a torn ACL.
“A win is a win,” Mayfield posted to Instagram. “That one was for you 13.”
Mayfield threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns, including a game-winner to Donovan Peoples-Jones with 11 seconds left.
“First, [the injury] sucks. No words. I would be lying to say that I was not beating myself up about it,” Mayfield told reporters after the game. “To go into halftime and see him, and I told him I love him, and he said, ‘Go be great.’ That was what he left me with to open up the second half. That was something I continued to remember throughout the second half.”
Mayfield’s favorite fan, wife Emily, celebrated the Browns adding another “W” to the win column, as they improved to 5-2 on the season.
“Win or lose, love you most 6,” she captioned a post on her Instagram story.
Last week, Emily lashed out at critics following a blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, in which an injured Mayfield threw for 119 yards with one touchdown, two interceptions and was sacked four times.
“He’s not in an easy position. And he’s grinding for this city. It takes time. Don’t send me some stupid s–t,” Emily responded to a post that appeared to compliment Mayfield’s turbulent tenure in Cleveland.
She also shared another message with fans, cautioning them about critiquing players.
“Before critics and fans jump to conclusions after an injury, loss, etc. they should put themselves in the athletes’ shoes… but let’s be honest, they never could because they aren’t part of the 1.6%, the best in the world,” the post read.
The Mayfields have been married since 2019.
