Why Adele’s ‘SNL’ skit about African tourism is under fire

Adele is rolling in deep trouble.

The singer hosted “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, appearing in one particularly controversial skit about African sex tourism — not long after being accused of cultural appropriation for wearing Bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini.

The skit featured her and cast members Kate McKinnon and Heidi Gardner as divorcees, touting tourism to Africa. The cringeworthy skit had Adele and the “SNL” comedians boasting of Africa’s “tribesmen” and “massive bamboos,” alluding to the growing trend of women of a certain age traveling to countries including Gambia to strike up romances with local men in exchange for monetary rewards.

In the background, toned black men are seen escorting white women in colorful sarongs across the beach. Meanwhile, Adele could hardly keep it together, cracking up as McKinnon repeated the promise of “tribesmen.”

But social media wasn’t cracking up. Immediately, critics lashed out at Adele and “SNL” for abusing stereotypes, fetishizing black men and mocking an area currently dealing with unrest over police brutality and the #EndSARS movement.

“Adele, the woman dating black men and wearing Bantu knots, decided to be ok joining in on a skit about divorced white women going to Africa to fetishize black men?” one user wrote.

“Not feeling this #snl Africa skit aside from Adele breaking. If you’re gonna try to touch that, it’s gotta be just a little smarter & more nuanced or don’t touch it at all. Not rn,” MTV host Dometi Pongo wrote.

Others piled on.

Reps for Adele, whose recent physical transformation has captured headlines and inspired others to shed the pounds using her diet, declined The Post’s request for comment.
