Biden says US will rejoin Paris Climate Accord on first day in office if he’s elected

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is pledging to rejoin the Paris Climate Accord on his first day in office.

In a tweet posted Wednesday night, the former vice president vowed that a Biden administration would undo the Trump administration’s action to withdraw from the agreement.

“Today, the Trump Administration officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. And in exactly 77 days, a Biden Administration will rejoin it,” Biden wrote on the social media platform.

Biden’s comments come before he has won the US presidential election.

The 2020 election was upended by the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in more ballots than ever being cast by mail.

Each of the 50 states has its own set of complex election laws — many of which have been taken up in courts across the country as states grapple with a surge of mail-in-voting for the first time.

While in-person voting started on Tuesday, final calls have yet to be made in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania, and it is unclear if any of the states will declare a winner before the end of Thursday night.

Decisions have also not been made in Alaska or North Carolina.

Still, Biden leads Trump by from 39 to 50 Electoral College votes as of midday Thursday, depending on whether one chooses to follow Fox News’ and the AP’s call of Arizona for the former VP.

The state and its 11 electors have not been called for Biden by any of the other preeminent news agencies, which are classifying the race as too close to call.

If Biden does emerge as the winner of the presidential contest, he will have until Feb. 21, 2021, to formally rejoin the international pact. Given that the next president will take office on Jan. 20, 2021, he will have plenty of time to meet the deadline.
