Another NFL starting quarterback has been placed on the COVID-19 list.
The Cleveland Browns, who are on a bye this week, announced Sunday morning they placed quarterback Baker Mayfield on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The team said a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 and close contacts were then self-isolated. Mayfield was deemed a close contact, according to multiple reports, but he could be back on the practice field by Wednesday if he continues to test negative.
The news comes on the same day Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was cleared to play in the Lions’ Week 9 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings after he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list midweek as a close contact.
New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton missed a game earlier this season after testing positive for COVID-19. Dallas Cowboys backup Andy Dalton, who had missed a game because of a concussion after taking over for Dak Prescott, is missing a second game on Sunday against the Steelers after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
The Browns are 5-3 after losing last week to the Las Vegas Raiders, their first game without Odell Beckham, who’s out for the season after tearing his ACL.
