First Lady Melania Trump has weighed in on the 2020 presidential election, echoing her husband in drawing a distinction between “legal” and “illegal” votes.
“The American people deserve fair elections,” she wrote Sunday afternoon on Twitter, in her first comments on the platform regarding the election.
“Every legal – not illegal – vote should be counted,” she continued. “We must protect our democracy with complete transparency.”
The president has invoked similar language in alleging that his election defeat to Democratic challenger Joe Biden was the result of fraud, though hasn’t offered concrete evidence to support the claim.
“If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us, if you count the votes that came in late,” the commander-in-chief claimed during a Thursday White House briefing.
Pennsylvania was called Saturday for Biden, and he has claimed the title of president-elect, but Trump has thus far refused to throw in the towel.
