More than 50 million COVID-19 cases have been recorded worldwide — with nearly 10 million infections in the US alone, the latest data shows.
With the pandemic accelerating in recent weeks, there are now at least 50,523,000 confirmed cases of the virus globally, according to figures Monday from Johns Hopkins University.
It took just 21 days for the world to make the jump from 40 million to 50 million confirmed cases, Reuters reported.
The US, with about 20 percent of global cases, has helped fuel the pandemic’s second wave as it inches towards its own grim milestone with 9,973,000 cases currently on the books.
In the latest seven-day average, the country has recorded more than 100,000 daily cases, data shows. It reached a record of 130,000 daily cases on Saturday alone.
In addition to the US, Brazil and India have the highest number of cases in the world.
The recent global increase has also been driven by surges in Europe — which has become the worst-affected region with about 12 million cases.
Europe is logging about 1 million new infections around every three days, prompting countries such as Germany, France and Britain to order lockdowns.
Recent weeks have been some of the worst for COVID-19 across the globe so far, with a quarter of the total cases recorded within the past 30 days, Reuters reported.
