Pete Carroll will remain head coach of the Seahawks for what likely will be the rest of his career.
After a decade with the organization, the 69-year-old Carroll agreed to a five-year extension that ties him to the Seahawks through the 2025 NFL season, ESPN reported Sunday. The report also says the deal was signed “long before” the Seahawks’ Week 9 game against the Bills.
Carroll will be 74 years old at the end of the contract — which reportedly makes Carroll one of, if not the highest-paid head coach in the league. Seattle last extended Carroll’s contract in December 2018.
Carroll, the oldest head coach in the NFL, is in his 11th season with the Seahawks and is the winningest head coach in franchise history with a 106-60-1 record.
The Seahawks enter Sunday’s matchup in Buffalo at the top of the NFC West with a 6-1 record. Carroll has led Seattle to eight playoff appearances, four NFC West titles, two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl victory during his tenure, including back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in 2014 and 2015.
Carroll worked his way from the college level to a defensive backs coaching gig with the Bills in 1984. He was then the defensive backs coach for the Vikings from 1985 to 1989 before joining the Jets as a defensive coordinator in 1990. In 1994, Carroll became head coach of the Jets but posted a 6-10 record and was fired after one season. He also spent two seasons as the 49ers defensive coordinator and three seasons as head coach of the Patriots.
He then returned to the college ranks as head coach at USC. Carroll’s Trojans were the AP national champions for the 2003 season and won the BCS championship over Oklahoma in the 2004 season, a title later vacated after former USC star Reggie Bush was found to have received impermissible benefits while a member of the university.
The Seahawks are on pace for their ninth straight winning season.
