‘Halloween’ superfan dies after Jamie Lee Curtis officiates wedding
He got his dying wish.
A terminally ill “Halloween” superfan was on his deathbed when the horror franchise’s star, Jamie Lee Curtis, presided over his wedding ceremony. He died less than an hour later.
“He was the greatest ‘Halloween’ fan in the world,” said a tearful Curtis, 61, while discussing the heart-rending saga with “The Talk.”
Horror fanatic Anthony Woodle, 30, of Charleston, South Carolina, had proposed to his girlfriend Emilee on Halloween in 2016 — as seen in this adorable video. However, tragedy struck when he was diagnosed with throat cancer a mere three years later, also on Halloween, Charleston’s Post and Courier reported.
Just prior to that, the movie theater where the aspiring director worked reached out to “Halloween Kills” director David Gordon Green, to tell him about Woodle’s devoted fandom. Green connected him with Hollywood’s iconic “Scream Queen” after learning of his diagnosis.
“They said that a young man who works there named Anthony Woodle, very young and beautiful guy, was diagnosed with cancer and didn’t have long to live,” explained Curtis, who subsequently called the young fan. The “Knives Out” actress was so moved by his story that she offered to officiate the wedding between Woodle and Emilee.
“And it turned out that I also offered to marry him because I am an officiant,” recalled Curtis.
Unfortunately, when the wedding rolled around on Sept. 13, Woodle’s condition had worsened significantly. Curtis performed the ceremony over Zoom while the fright-flick fan lay unconscious in bed with his bride-to-be by his side. The event began at 10:30 a.m.
“Anthony and Emilee, all anyone is promised is this moment,” said Curtis. “We live and we love in this moment. May the blessings of God rest upon you, may his peace abide with you, may her spirit illuminate your heart now, in this moment. With the power vested in me by the internet, it is my great pleasure to tell you that you are now married people.”
Woodle passed away at 11:17 a.m.
“It turned out to be something obviously incredibly moving and also very life-affirming,” Curtis told “The Talk” about the harrowing moment.
Before Woodle died, Green had gifted the couple a private screening of “Halloween Kills” — which is slated to be released in 2021 after COVID-19 delays. Emilee said that was the most she’d ever “seen him smile.”
Curtis, who learned about his death a day later, has since posted a touching tribute to the superfan on her Instagram page: “Anthony Woodle, rest in the knowledge that you came from love, were surrounded by love and found true love in Emilee,” she wrote. “Anthony, I am honored to have been your friend.”
