Steve Cohen is swatting away Mets rumors on Twitter: ‘Wrong again’

Steve Cohen is on Twitter to connect with the fans – and to refute team rumors.

The new Mets owner responded to a report Thursday that Indians general manager Mike Chernoff was set to formally interview for the organization’s vacant president of baseball operations position.

“Not that I’m aware of, wrong again,” Cohen wrote.

MLB Network reported the Mets were expected to interview Chernoff, who was appointed general manager in Cleveland following the 2015 season, sometime soon. An official date was never confirmed before Cohen dismissed the rumor.

Chernoff, a Livingston, New Jersey native, has been linked to the president of baseball operations position since the arrival of Cohen and team president Sandy Alderson. It was unclear if the Indians were going to grant permission for the Mets to speak to Chernoff.

Working his way up from an internship in the Indians’ front office, Chernoff became the team’s assistant general manager in 2010. After he was promoted to GM in 2015, Chernoff led Cleveland to within one win of their first World Series crown since 1948 when they lost in Game 7 to the Cubs in 2016.

Former Marlins president Mike Hill is the only other known candidate for the position.
