Woman narrowly avoids death after she’s pushed onto Union Square subway tracks
A disturbed man pushed a straphanger onto the tracks while she was waiting for the subway, Thursday morning, cops said.
The attack happened on the northbound 4/5/6 platform at 14th Street-Union Square just before 8:30 a.m., police said.
The 24-year-old man was pacing up and down the platform before coming up behind the woman — appearing to time the shove until the 5 train is pulling into the station.
“She fell, fortunately for her, between the row bed and the rails,” Transit Chief Kathleen O’Reilly said. “Very minor injuries but for the grace of God.”
Two cars passed over her before the train could stop and the FDNY could pull her to safety.
Platform conductor Bernie Wilkerson told The Post he saw the “disheveled-looking” man “run full speed and pushed her onto the tracks.”
Wilkerson said he yelled at the man, who quickly dropped to the ground.
“I think he thought I was a cop,” he said.
“She’s gonna make it with minor injuries and that’s a great bit.”
Aditya Vemulapati was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, police said.
The 40-year-old victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, according to cops.
The suspect, who only recently came to NYC, was taken in custody on charges pending, according to cops and police sources.
The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
