Yankees minor league infield coordinator and former big league infielder Miguel Cairo is headed to the White Sox’s dugout to be Tony La Russa’s bench coach, a person close to the situation confirmed Wednesday evening.
Cairo played in the big leagues for 17 years and was with the Yankees in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Cairo, who was with the Mets in 2005, also played for the Blue Jays, Cubs, Tampa Bay, Cardinals (where La Russa was the manager), Mariners, Phillies and Reds. Cairo played 1,490 big league games.
This past season would have been the 46-year-old Cairo’s third year in his position with the Yankees, but COVID-19 canceled minor league games. Prior to that, Cairo was a special assistant to Reds general managers Walt Jocketty and Dick Williams for five years.
