Mystery monolith disappears from Romanian forest
A mysterious monolith that popped up in Romania last week has disappeared — sparking more speculation that there may be a link to a similar riddle in the Utah desert.
The shiny metal monolith was spotted in Romania’s mountainous Piatra Neamt region on Friday but was nowhere in sight on Tuesday.
The mystery is eerily similar to the appearance and disappearance of an 11-foot-tall object that popped up in Utah on Nov. 18.
It became a social media sensation and attracted gawkers — but was gone Friday.
The 9-foot-tall Romanian version resembles the alien monolith featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 science-fiction classic “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and caused a stir among locals.
But the truth may be less thrilling.
“The 2.8-meter-tall structure disappeared overnight as quietly as it was erected last week,” local journalist Robert Iosub told Reuters.
“An identified person, apparently a bad local welder, made it,” he said. “Now all that remains is just a small hole covered by rocky soil.”
Nonetheless, Piatra Neamt police are investigating the prank because the monolith was installed near an ancient Dacian forest, an archaeologically protected area.
