Eric Mangini relives angry ‘Sesame Street’ run-in after Jets loss

No place is safe for a Jets coach when things are going bad.

Eric Mangini enjoyed a 10-6 season and a trip to the playoffs in his first year leading the Jets in 2006, but found out how quickly things can turn sour in New York.

“This guy, a truck driver, was driving down the street and I’m walking with Jake, my oldest, and we’re walking into where they filmed ‘Sesame Street,’ and the guy yells, ‘Hey Mangini, thanks for that pile of s–t you put out on the field,'” Mangini said this week on The Post’s “Gang’s All Here” podcast.

“My son’s like, ‘Dad, why is that man yelling at you?’ I said, ‘Oh, he’s just frustrated with some things, don’t worry about it.'”

Mangini said he thought the incident might have happened during his second year at the helm, when the Jets went 4-12, but he appeared on “Sesame Street” with Chad Pennington, Laveranues Coles and Ben Graham during his first season — a few days after a 31-13 loss to the Bills, which could have been what set off the truck driver.

Either way, it was a reminder of the pitfalls that come with being the head coach of the Jets for Mangini, who was eventually fired in 2008.

“I had a young family in a neighborhood and everybody was very nice, but when you lose a game, that can change pretty dramatically,” Mangini said with a chuckle. “There’s a great side to it, and New York’s such an amazing place to live, especially in that context, but there’s a flipside that comes with it too. It ebbs and flows.”
