An Indiana toddler fatally shot himself with a gun he found in his home Tuesday in a horrific accident, authorities said.
Officers responded to a home in Fairmount around 12:20 p.m. where they found 2-year-old Leighton Owings after he had shot himself with a loaded Ruger nine-millimeter handgun, Indiana State Police said in a statement.
Leighton was taken to Marion General Hospital in Indianapolis where he died.
The toddler was alone in a bedroom while his mother, Caci Seals, was in another room feeding her infant child, state police said.
The investigation is ongoing, and police said evidence will be turned over to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.
