Connecticut private school staffers get COVID-19 vaccine due to CDC error

A Connecticut private school gave its staff coronavirus vaccines meant for health care workers and other vulnerable groups after it was mistakenly provided the shots, according to a report.

The Williams School in New London, which charges $30,000 per year in tuition, administered the jabs to 11 staffers after accidentally being categorized as “critical infrastructure,” according to The Day newspaper.

The vaccines were supposed to be reserved for hospital staffers and nursing home residents, the report said.

“The breakdown occurred where someone entered individuals into the system who weren’t eligible,” local health official Stephen Mansfield told the outlet.

He said school staffers regretted having procured the shots before prioritized groups.

“We do our best to communicate to our partners what the eligibility requirements are, but it isn’t always crystal clear,” Mansfield said.

The school’s head, Mark Fader, told The Day in an interview that the CDC told him that they had been designated a “critical infrastructure group” and would be provided vaccines.

He put 53 staffers on the inoculation list and 11 of them received the shot before the health department alerted the school of the error.

The office of Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said the massive vaccine mobilization would inevitably involve complications. The school is not expected to face any penalties for delivering the shots.

“This is the largest vaccine rollout in human history and there are just going to be mistakes,” a spokesperson said.
