Sara Tirschwell announces run for mayor of NYC

Financier Sara Tirschwell is filing papers to declare her candidacy for mayor.

Tirschwell, 55, has spent 30 years on Wall Street as a loan trader and hedge fund manager who specialized in investing in troubled corporations and countries — often as the only women or one of the few in the field.

Tirschwell said she’s running to prevent a third term of Mayor Bill de Blasio, complaining that many of the Democratic candidates seeking to replace him will continue his left-leaning policies.

“New Yorkers cannot afford a 3rd de Blasio term, plain and simple. I am uniquely prepared to lead New York City out of crisis and will be a refreshing antidote to the incompetence that got us here,” she said.

She’s interested in curbing crime.

Last summer, Tirschwell arranged for private security to patrol outside a Long Island City restaurant harassed by drug abusers and vagrants.

Tirschwell, who has two daughters, said she has the grit to be mayor, having overcome tragedies.

She grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, the daughter of an Army dentist. Her mother committed suicide when she was three years old, and her stepmother died of multiple myeloma when she was 14.

Her first husband died from alcoholism.

Tirschwell graduated from Rice University with a degree in Economics, and got her first job in finance during the 1987 financial crisis.

“I came here as a young woman from Texas seeking opportunity after a childhood full of loss and I will be damned if I am going to lose the city I love too,” she said.

Tirschwell filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board making her candidacy official.

“I’ve overcome many challenges in my life, including becoming a successful woman in finance. But my struggle pales in comparison to the struggles many New Yorkers face today,” she said.

She complained about “poor planning, heavy-handed regulation and decades of neglect” that has perpetuated segregated neighborhoods and high costs of living.

“We feel it when there is not enough money for critical services and our children receive below average education. We experience it when our Mayor and Governor are so incompetent that COVID-19 vaccines are literally being flushed down the toilet.

“I am running for Mayor to make it safer and easier to live in New York.”

Tirschwell is embroiled in an alleged sexual discrimination case.

She sued her former employer, the $200 billion asset firm TCW, after the company fired her in what was considered Wall Street’s first #MeToo case “.

Tirschwell claimed her ouster was the result of filing a sexual harassment complaint against her former boss. The firm said she was fired for performance issues.

Some of her claims were tossed out in Manhattan state Supreme Court last year, but she’s appealed the ruling.

Other Republicans eyeing the race include Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa and taxi drivers’ and bodega advocate Fernando Matteo.
