After the hirings of Urban Meyer and Robert Saleh this week, two of the NFL’s five remaining head-coaching vacancies are gaining clarity, as well.
The Atlanta Falcons agreed to terms with Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the team announced Friday. Smith also interviewed twice for the Jets’ opening before they hired Saleh on Thursday.
Former Giants tight end Dan Campbell – currently the New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach – also reportedly has emerged as the leading contender for the Detroit Lions’ vacancy, according to NFL Network. Campbell played four seasons with the Giants from 1999-2002 and the final three seasons of his 10-year career with the Lions, who fired Matt Patricia in November.
The Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles also are looking for a new head coach.
Meyer, the former NCAA national champion with Florida and Ohio State, was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday to replace Doug Marrone.
