NJ Congressman asks Biden to fire US Postal Service board

US Rep. Bill Pascrell, a New Jersey Democrat, is asking President Biden to deliver a message to the US Postal Service by firing its entire board of governors for “dereliction.”

Pascrell accused the USPS board of being “complicit” with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in trying to “subvert vote-by-mail elections” during last year’s presidential race in a letter to Biden on Monday.

The congressman accused DeJoy of conspiring with former President Donald Trump to “dismantle” the Postal Service and disrupt the delivery and counting of mail-in ballots in the election.

“After several years of unprecedented sabotage, the United States Postal Service is teetering on the brink of collapse,” Pascrell wrote. “Through the devastating arson of the Trump regime, the USPS Board of Governors sat silent. Their dereliction cannot now be forgotten.”

“Therefore, I urge you to fire the entire Board of Governors and nominate a new slate of leaders to begin the hard work of rebuilding our Postal Service for the next century.”

DeJoy, a former Trump fundraiser, came under fire during last year’s presidential campaign over reported irregularities in the handling of mail-in ballots, which were believed to largely favor Biden in the election.

DeJoy remains in the post five days into Biden’s presidency.

The USPS Board of Governors consists of the postmaster general, the deputy postmaster general and seven governors.

Pascrell maintained the president has the authority to remove DeJoy “for cause.”

He accused DeJoy of making “efforts to dismantle mail sorting machines, cut overtime, restrict deliveries, and remove mailboxes” that “slowed mail nationally.”

Trump continually claimed that the election was rigged against him and questioned the legitimacy of mail-in ballots in the election.

Asked about Pascrell’s request Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said she could not immediately comment on it.
