The 5-year-old girl who was in a Missouri car crash involving former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid remains “unresponsive,” even though she has awakened from a coma, according to a report.
Ariel Young woke up Monday after spending 11 days in a coma, according to an update her aunt Tiffany Verhulst posted to a GoFundMe page.
A spokesperson for the Kansas City police told People magazine on Wednesday that Ariel “is now breathing on her own but remains unresponsive.”
When asked to elaborate on the word “unresponsive,” the spokesperson told the mag: “That’s all the information we were given.”
The 5-year-old was inside a Chevrolet Traverse driven by her mother when it was struck by a white Dodge Ram driven by Reid near the Chiefs practice facility at about 9 p.m. Feb. 4, authorities have said.
The Traverse had been pulled over on the side of a highway entrance ramp when the crash occurred.
Reid told police he had “two or three drinks” and had a prescription for Adderall when the accident occurred, according to a search warrant.
Police have said they are investigating whether Reid, who has a previous drunken driving conviction on his record, was impaired before the crash.
Following the crash, he was placed on leave through the duration of his contract, which has since expired.
As of Thursday morning, a GoFundMe campaign for the girl had raised more than $509,000 of its $420,000 goal.
