Tourist visiting from Kansas shot in Manhattan, cops say
He’s not in Kansas anymore.
A tourist from the Sunflower State was hit by a stray bullet in Midtown early Wednesday after returning from an excursion to Philadelphia to watch the Mets game, authorities said.
Chris Ruby, 44, of Kansas City, was at the corner of West 38th Street and Eighth Avenue, walking back to his hotel just after 2 a.m., when he passed by two men fighting, according to cops and police sources.
One of the men opened fire and Ruby was struck in the right shoulder, cops said.
Ruby — who had just returned to the city by Amtrak after a visit to Philadelphia, where he watched the Mets’ 8-4 victory against the Phillies — was not the intended target, cops confirmed.
“I was having such a great time until this happened,” the tourist, who said he was visiting the Big Apple for the first time, told ABC 7.
Ruby, who was flying home to Kansas City Wednesday afternoon, told the station he is a baseball fan who wants to see a game in every stadium — though he is not a fan of the Mets or the Phillies.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition and later released.
“It was really bad,” he said. “I’m just ready to go home. I was in the hospital for five hours and then the police station for two or three.”
Ruby arrived in the city Saturday and was set to fly home Wednesday afternoon, he told the station.
Brannovan Martinez, 21, of the Melrose section of the Bronx, was arrested in connection to the shooting around 2:10 p.m. and charged with assault, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment, cops said.
