Officer Michael Mundy of NYPD dies of COVID-19, police say

A beloved cop who joined the NYPD two decades ago just before the Sept. 11 terror attacks has died of COVID-19, officials said Thursday.

Officer Michael Mundy, 45, died Wednesday night, becoming the department’s latest casualty of the coronavirus — and the third tragedy to hit force this week, according to police.

“It is with extreme sorrow, that we announce the untimely passing of Police Officer Michael Mundy,” a tweet by the NYPD’s 77th Precinct reads. “Faithfully serving the people of Brooklyn for nearly twenty years, Officer Mundy was the cop that we all aspire to be. We’ll miss you, Mike.”

Mundy, who lived in Brooklyn and worked in the borough’s 77 Precinct, was part of the 9/11 police academy class that was appointed on July 11, 2001.

In an email to the department, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea wrote: “Our NYPD family this evening — already deep in mourning – has lost another member to the tragic effects of COVID-19.”

“Tonight — as well will each day and night ahead— we are keeping Michael, and all of his loved ones and colleagues, in our prayers during this difficult time,” Shea wrote Wednesday evening.

In total, 55 uniformed and civilian members of the NYPD have died from complications of COVID-19, a police spokesman said.

News of Mundy’s death came just hours after a 34-year-old officer committed suicide and a day after NYPD officer Anastasios Tsakos was struck and killed by a drunk driver
