Village hidden under Italian lake for decades emerges from water

It was a watershed moment.

An Italian village that was hidden under a lake for decades has emerged from the water’s surface, according to a report on Tuesday.

Once home to hundreds of people, Curon was submerged in 1950 when authorities decided to build a dam and merge two nearby lakes, the BBC reported.

It remained covered by Lake Resia for the next 70 years — save for a 14-century church steeple that stuck out of the icy waters.

But the lake, which sits near Italy’s border with Austria and Switzerland, was temporarily drained to allow for repairs on a reservoir.

As the water levels decreased, old steps, cellars and walls that would normally be on the lake’s bed were exposed, according to the report.

Luisa Azzolini, who is from the region, wrote on Twitter that it was a “strange feeling” to be walking amid the rubble of the lost village.

The real-life Atlantis inspired the supernatural Italian Netflix drama “Curon,” as well as a book.
