The worst of India’s devastating second wave of the coronavirus may be over.
The country reported its lowest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases in 45 days, the health ministry said Saturday, according to the BBC. India reported 173,790 new cases, a continuation of the decrease in cases seen during the past two weeks. A further 3,617 deaths were recorded.
More than 320,000 people have died since India was hit by a second wave of COVID-19. Only the US and Brazil have reported more deaths. The country’s health care system was overwhelmed — with hospital beds, oxygen, medicines in short supply. Even crematoriums ran out of space.
