Another college basketball titan is on his way out.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has decided to retire after the 2021-2022 campaign, Stadium first reported Wednesday.
The Hall of Famer, who will turn 75 in February, is entering his 42nd season as head coach of the Blue Devils, who have won five national championships and 15 ACC championships under his watch. Krzyzewski, who owns the most victories in college basketball history, has been a head coach since 1975, when he began by leading Army for five seasons before taking over at Duke.
Former Duke guard and current assistant coach Jon Scheyer was announced as Krzyzewski’s successor beginning with the 2022-23 season. Scheyer is responsible for recruiting former Duke stars Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson, among others. ESPN reported Duke considered outside candidates, including Harvard’s Tommy Amaker, a former Duke player and assistant, before deciding on Scheyer as the coach-in-waiting.
Entering his final season, Krzyzewski owns a record of 1,097-302 at Duke and 1,170-361 overall. That includes a 13-11 mark this past season, when the Blue Devils missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995 and for only the fifth time in Krzyzewski’s tenure — not including 2020, when the tournament was canceled because of the pandemic.
Krzyzewski has led Duke to the Final Four 12 times and has produced 28 NBA lottery picks, including Grant Hill, Kyrie Irving, Tatum and Williamson.
Krzyzewski’s retirement will come after his biggest rival, North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, announced his own retirement in April.
A former Army point guard, who played under legendary coach Bob Knight, Krzyzewski was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
He has also won three gold medals as the head coach of the USA men’s Olympic basketball team.
