Listen to Episode 60 of ‘Amazin’ But True’: Former Mets Trainer Ray Ramirez Speaks Out Against Fans’ Criticisms

Ex-Mets trainer Ray Ramirez Anthony J. Causi

The Mets keep finding ways to win series with still so many players on the IL. They did that over the weekend against a good Padres team. They took the first two games before Luis Rojas frustrated the fan base with some starter-bullpen mismanagement, leaving Jeurys Familia in for far too many pitches. Nonetheless, the Mets still have a three-game division lead with a tough four-game series at Citi Field against the Cubs ahead of them this week.

To talk about the series win over the Padres, Rojas, an electric Citi Field, and the Cubs series, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring an exclusive interview with former Mets head athletic trainer Ray Ramirez.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:

  • LUIS ROJAS MISMANAGEMENT: Why didn’t he leave Joey Lucchesi in for longer on Sunday? Why did he leave Jeurys Familia in for too long? Why put Jacob Barnes in the game? Where was Trevor May? There’s lot to address on a 2-1 game quickly becoming 7-2 thanks to some bullpen mismanagement from the manager.
  • CUBS SERIES: Another good test for the Mets this week against a hot Cubs team. David Peterson needs a strong outing Monday or he could get sent down. Sean Reid-Foley is coming back and the Mets will need him, maybe even as Peterson’s replacement. Mets will be cautious with Jacob deGrom and his injury, though he should be fine to pitch Wednesday. Mets need him for long haul. Great to see Citi Field with more than 20,000 people, atmosphere was electric over weekend.

(2004-2017)

  • GETTING BLAME: Fans need to understand it’s not the trainers’ fault. Fans don’t know what they are dealing with. Didn’t pay attention to the noise surrounding him. Boos from fans were just ignorance. Didn’t let it bother him.
  • MANAGERS: Loved working with Willie Randolph, because of his confidence and was a proven champion. Loved working with Terry Collins.
  • SOUTH KOREA: Now working with the Air Force in South Korea training F-16 pilots. Has gotten other opportunities and from baseball teams, but is enjoying where he’s at now.
  • MESSAGE TO FANS: It was a thankless job. Grateful to be there 13 years and working with the Wilpons and everyone there was great.
