A fan is in serious condition after enduring a horrifying plunge from the stands during Sunday’s Euro 2020 match between England and Croatia.
The incident occurred shortly after kickoff, with the fan reportedly falling over the railing while attempting to fix a flag. Witnesses saw the fan fall approximately 20 feet, from section 508 to section 208 of Wembley Stadium.
“The spectator was given on-site medical attention and was then taken to hospital in a serious condition,” a Wembley Stadium spokesperson told Sky Sports.
“We will continue to work with UEFA to ensure the matter is fully investigated and we are continuing to monitor the situation.”
One fan told The Sun that it “took ages” for medical attention to reach the fallen fan.
“It was awful to witness,” the fan said. “… We were trying to get stewards and medical professionals on scene. The stewarding was absolutely awful, no urgency.”
Sunday’s match, which England won 1-0, marked the first time fans were allowed inside Wembley Stadium since November of 2019. Wembley is currently operating at 25% capacity.
