Native New Yorker visiting Austin dead after mass shooting

A young tourist has died from injuries suffered during a mass shooting on a crowded downtown Austin street over the weekend that wounded more than a dozen other people, police in Texas said,

Kantor moved to Michigan after graduating from Michigan State University. Family Handout

Douglas John Kantor, who was originally from Airmont, New York, died from his wounds Sunday afternoon — a day after gunfire struck him and 13 others on a street packed with bars in downtown Austin, news station Fox29 reported.

“He was loved by all who knew him and had an infectious smile that would light up any room. He was loved by his family, friends and everyone who met him,” his family said.

Kantor had been waiting to get inside a bar when he was struck in the crossfire around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in what authorities believe started as a dispute between two parties, news station WABC reported.

He had been visiting from Michigan, where he moved to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Michigan State University, according to his family and LinkedIn page. He later set down permanent roots there when he bought a home while pursuing his master’s from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

“He was looking forward to marrying his high school sweetheart of 10 years and starting a family,” his family said.

Police said a juvenile male was arrested Saturday in connection to the shooting and another suspect remains at large, CBS Austin reported.
