Terrance McKinney’s knockout celebration at UFC 263 was derailed by an awkward injury.
After making history during his UFC debut over the weekend — knocking out Matt Frevola in the first seven seconds of the preliminary match — McKinney injured his knee while celebrating in the octagon.
Following the KO, which marked the fastest knockout in the lightweight division’s history, McKinney propelled himself up to the top of the ring.
On his way down, the 26-year-old landed awkwardly and immediately clutched his right knee in pain. As a result of the fall, McKinney, who has been fighting pro since 2017, conducted his post-fight interview while sitting on a stool.
He hobbled out of the octagon, without putting weight on his right knee and needed assistance walking, though he said he should be fine.
“I think I’ll be OK, I’ve just got to stretch it,” McKinney told UFC’s Joe Rogan after the fight.
The McKinney-Frevola fight was part of the UFC 263 early preliminary card. McKinney’s good luck charm and “hero,” mom Kitara Johnson, flew in from Washington to be with him for the fight
McKinney took to Instagram after the knockout, which included a couple of hammer-fists to the head of Frevola, to reflect on the match.
“UFC 263 was a success how’d I’d rate my performance 10/10 for the celebration landing not so hot 0/10 lmao,” he wrote alongside a photo of him in the octagon. He added that he’ll work on his future celebrations.
“All glory to god we are just getting started,” McKinney continued.
McKinney’s historic win came just over a week after he recorded a 72-second knockout win over Michael Irizarry at LFA 109.
