Man charged in stabbing of Eric Adams campaign volunteer held on bail

The homeless man busted for stabbing a volunteer with the Eric Adams mayoral campaign will be held in jail on $100,000 bail, a judge ruled Saturday.

Bronx Criminal Court Judge Patsy Gouldborne set the cash bail for Gary Oliver, 34, after a prosecutor argued said he was a flight risk “due to the strength of the case and the nature of the charges and the sentencing he is facing.”

“The defendant approached the victim in broad daylight and stabbed the victim multiple times using a large knife and then fled the scene. The incident was captured clearly on video and shows the defendant jumped on the victim and stabbed him multiple times,” Assistant District Attorney Michael McDonnell said during the virtual arraignment.

Police arrested Oliver, 34, Friday and charged him with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment in the June 20 attack outside a Bronx bodega.

Oliver —  who records show has 14 prior arrests and was last busted in 2020 on a robbery rap — and the victim, who is also homeless, knew each other and had been in fights previously but that did not matter in this case, McDonnell said.

“It is clear from video surveillance that the defendant lunged at the victim unprovoked,” he said.

Gouldborne issued an order of protection for the victim, who survived the attack but needed surgery for his wounds.

A lawyer for Oliver said he had no money to pay bail.

Gary Oliver, the man who stabbed, 2021 NYC mayoral candidate, Eric Adams’ volunteer, was arrested and brought from the NYPD’s 40th Precinct in the Bronx, NY on July 2, 2021.
