A Florida woman has died from an apparent alligator attack in a retention pond on the Fourth of July holiday, authorities said.
The 29-year-old woman’s body was found just after 8:40 p.m. on Sunday in Valrico, a town east of Tampa, news outlets WINK News and WFLA reported.
Her injuries were consistent with an alligator attack, though officials haven’t determined the official cause of death, authorities said.
Authorities have not released the woman’s identity.
The pond where her body was found is known to be frequented by alligators, authorities said.
“What a tragic ending to the 4th of July holiday for this woman’s family and friends,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.
“I want to thank our local partners for their cooperation with this investigation as we work to learn what led up to her death.”
