Angels broadcaster Daron Sutton blindsided by firing

The Los Angeles Angels have fired Bally Sports West play-by-play announcer Daron Sutton for undisclosed reasons. Sutton received the news on Saturday completely out of the blue.

“This was definitely more of a trial or test than I understood when we started,” Sutton told the LA Times on Sunday. “I enjoyed every second of this opportunity and will cherish the memories always. I am proud of every moment of television the Bally Sports team produced, that I was a part of, without incident, and to the joy and satisfaction of so many.”

Sutton was hired to be the secondary announcer behind Matt Vasgersian this season. The two split duties because of Vasgersian’s duties for MLB Network and ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.” The duo replaced Victor Rojas after he became the president and general manager of the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

The son of late Dodgers legend Don Sutton, Daron supported the Angels and was even their radio play-by-play announcer for two seasons from 2000-01. When Sutton first received news that he landed the job, he called it his “dream job” and called the fans some of the best in baseball.

Sutton, who also worked as the TV play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers (2002-06) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-12), is unsure of what his next move may be. However, he is “grateful to Bally Sports for this opportunity and our relationship remains strong and productive to this very moment. I’m looking forward to working with them again in the future.”
