Where Knicks could go in free agency if they land guard in trade

If the Knicks land point guard Collin Sexton in a trade, the cap space they would have used on a free-agent starting point guard could be funneled elsewhere.

The Knicks, who have $50 million in cap space, still are focused on an athletic small forward. Last year, Reggie Bullock and RJ Barrett were interchangeable as the starting shooting guard and small forward.

The Post reported on June 7 that mutual interest exists between the Knicks and the Warriors’ small forward Kelly Oubre. The athletic wing has shot well from 3-point range in the past, defends, and is a free agent.

With Klay Thompson expected to take his spot next season, Oubre has his eye on a starting role elsewhere.

Oubre thinks he’s got a lot more to offer. In an interview this week with The Athletic, the former Kansas star said, “First and foremost, I’m young — 25 years old, one of the youngest free agents. I’m continuously growing and elevating my game each and every year. I’m nowhere close to [my] prime. I’m going to continue to get better and the sky’s beyond the limit. The universe is the limit for me at this point. I’ve proven that with limited opportunity I can make things happen. Always.”

The Suns traded Oubre in a multi-team deal to get Chris Paul before the season.

“I’ve proven I always get better and I’m a worker,’’ said Oubre, who averaged 15.4 points and six rebounds in Golden State. “You wouldn’t be able to see improvements in my game somewhere each and every year if I wasn’t working continuously on my craft. I think that puts me at an advantage over a lot of other free agents. It’s a beautiful summer for me.’’

After The Post’s report, subsequent rumors had San Antonio and Miami also interested.
