Dramatic video captured an 18-month-old girl being rescued after she floated nearly a mile out to sea off the coast of Tunisia in an inflatable tube.
The family was enjoying a day on the beach Saturday in Kelibia, on the country’s northeast coast, when strong winds swept the girl away while her parents were “momentarily distracted,” government sources told local radio station Shems FM, the Sun reported.
After realizing their daughter was missing, the parents alerted authorities, who launched a rescue mission.
First responders helped by volunteers, one on a jet ski, eventually located the child, who appeared distressed but otherwise unharmed.
Video taken by the jet ski operator shows a man in the water pulling the girl onto the craft as the coast is seen in the distance.
Many Tunisians flood to the beaches over the summer and enjoy the cool Mediterranean waters amid the searing temperatures.
Local authorities urged parents to be vigilant during the weather changes in the area, Shems FM reported.
