Jets assistant coach Greg Knapp in critical condition after bike crash
A Jets assistant coach is fighting for his life after a “horrific” bike accident over the weekend.
Greg Knapp, a longtime NFL assistant who joined the Jets in January as their passing game coordinator, is in critical condition in a California hospital after being struck by a motorist while riding his bike. There is widespread concern around the NFL for Knapp, a well-liked coach who has worked for a number of teams over 24 years.
Knapp, 58, has been an NFL assistant coach since 1997, primarily working with quarterbacks. He has worked for the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, Seahawks, Texans and Broncos before joining the Jets as part of Robert Saleh’s new staff. Knapp spent the past three seasons as the Falcons quarterbacks coach. He won a Super Bowl with the Broncos in 2015 as Peyton Manning’s quarterbacks coach.
One of Knapp’s primary jobs with the Jets is developing rookie quarterback Zach Wilson. Knapp was the coach seen speaking with Wilson the most during the spring practices.
According to the San Ramon (Calif.) Police Department, the accident occurred just before 3 p.m. on Saturday. The police said Knapp sustained “major injuries.” It is not believed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Greg is such an amazing individual, it is hard to imagine the challenge facing him and his family,” Saleh said in a statement released by the team Tuesday. “Greg’s fun nature, kind disposition and wealth of knowledge has allowed him to make genuine connections with all of our coaches, players and staff since he has been here.
“I ask that you keep him in your prayers as we all pull for him to recover from this horrific accident.”
The Jets also issued a statement from Knapp’s family.
“Greg is an amazing father and husband whose passion for life can be felt in all his interactions with people,” the family said. “He is our rock and biggest supporter, pushing us to all strive to better ourselves each day with constant love and inspiration.
“While many know him for his achievements as a coach, his impact as a father and husband are far greater. We are so fortunate to have him in our lives. We are sincerely thankful to all those who have continued to reach out and provide support — it has meant the world to us. We ask that you continue to pray for Greg and our family during this time.”
