Carson Wentz will have foot surgery in huge Colts setback

It looks like Carson Wentz is going to miss some time – again.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said Monday that Wentz would undergo foot surgery to remove a broken bone. He is expected to miss anywhere between five and 12 weeks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The oft-injured 28-year-old reportedly felt a “twinge” after aggravating his foot rolling out for a pass during Thursday’s training camp practice.

Initial reports suggested Wentz would opt for rest and rehab instead of an immediate surgery, which medical personnel said would have made him less mobile.

Now it appears extremely unlikely Wentz will be available for the Colts’ Week 1 game against the Seahawks.

“The job is Jacob’s right now,” Reich told reporters, referring to second-year quarterback Jacob Eason. “He has to prove it, he knows that. Jacob’s in the driver’s seat.”

Rookie Sam Ehlinger and 2020 undrafted free agent Jalen Morton are also on the depth chart behind Wentz. The team also recently signed former Packers quarterback Brett Hundley to the roster as insurance.

Wentz’s injury may also affect his old team, too. The Colts traded a conditional 2022 second-round draft pick – and the No. 85 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft – to the Eagles for Wentz in February.

The selection will become a first-round pick if Wentz plays more than 75 percent of snaps or Wentz plays at least 70 percent of snaps and the Colts make the playoffs — both of which are in jeopardy due to this injury.

The former North Dakota State star threw for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions – while getting sacked 50 times – in 12 games for the 4-11-1 Eagles in 2020 and was benched toward the end of the year.

He tore his ACL and missed time before the Eagles won their first Super Bowl in 2018.
