The Mets got help on Friday when they added Javier Baez right before the trade deadline. Unfortunately, the lineup still left much to be desired over the weekend as they lost two out of three to the Reds. As it has been for a while now, the Mets are still in first place, but their lead is just at 3.5 games. Due to struggles from the rest of the NL East, they still remain atop the standings, but will they be able to still win the division if they continue to barely score any runs?

To talk about the weekend at Citi Field, Baez in Queens and what lies ahead, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring an interview with the radio voice of the Mets, Howie Rose.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:

  • BAEZ ADDITION: Smart trade by the Mets. Baez on a long-term deal on this infield with Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso would be huge. Made immediate impact with a home run in his Mets debut Saturday. Trevor Williams was an OK addition, but thought they may try and get a better pitcher.
  • SERIES LOSS: Michael Conforto is in a bad funk and Brandon Drury will need to keep getting chances over him right now. Drury is scorching hot. Baez could be the guy that gets the long-term deal and not Conforto.
  • NO ROCKER: Did the Mets make a mistake not signing, let alone offering their first-round draft pick Kumar Rocker a contract? Also, we play a clip from Figgie’s interview with Steve Somers on WFAN, where he struggles to remember my name.

  • METS HALL OF FAME: Announcing Saturday’s Mets HOF ceremony and how special it was. Edgardo Alfonzo with a long speech, memories of Al Jackson and Figgie’s time having him as a coach in the Mets organization.
  • BAEZ/CONFORTO: Thought Mets should have also tried to get a bigger name starting pitcher. Would like to see Conforto put together a good stretch in final two months, great kid, would love to see him stay here.
  • ROCKER: Not a money situation. No pre-draft MRI, was clearly something they were concerned with.
