What to watch on Day 14 of the 2020 Olympics: US goes for gold in track, beach volleyball

There are only a few days left in the 2020 Olympics, but still plenty of major medals to be decided — especially for Americans.

Some of Team USA’s highest profile athletes go for gold on Day 14 in Tokyo, which starts Thursday night in America and continues into Friday morning.

Here are the major Olympic events that will take place on Friday, Aug. 6:

Beach volleyball: 10:30 PM (Thursday), NBC

It all comes down to this. The American duo of Alix Klineman and April Ross will face off against Australia’s Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar for the beach volleyball gold medal Thursday night at 10:30.

Klineman and Ross hope to bring the gold back to the US, who won it in three straight Olympics (2004, ’08 and ’12, behind Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings) before Brazil won gold in 2016. In the Rio Games, Ross secured bronze with Walsh Jennings as her partner and now has a chance to win her first Olympic gold. The American team has only lost one set so far, while the Aussies dropped an entire game in pool play.

Track and field: 7:50 AM, Peacock

There are no track events until the morning on Day 14, but there’s wall-to-wall action once you get out of bed. The women’s javelin throw (7:50 AM) and men’s 5000-meter final (8:00) will kick off the morning, before the women’s 400-meter kicks off (8:35). American track legend Allyson Felix will run in that race, hoping to win her Olympic-record 10th medal, while Quanera Hayes will race in her first ever Olympic final.

To finish off the morning: the women’s 1500-meter final (8:50), the women’s 4x100m relay (9:30) and the men’s 4x100m relay (9:50), which the Americans dramatically failed to qualify for Wednesday.

Women’s basketball: 12:40 AM, NBC

Team USA will face Serbia in the semifinal of the women’s basketball tournament in the wee hours of Friday morning. The Americans kept rolling with a dominant 79-55 victory over Australia in the quarterfinal, and are expected to push on through to the finals. If they do, they will play the winner of Japan and France, who will face off at 7:00.

Women’s soccer: 8:00 AM, NBC

Ah, what could have been. The USWNT fell to this Canadian side in the semifinals, missing their chance to follow up their World Cup win with Olympic gold. Instead, they settled for bronze, and now must watch as Canada faces Sweden in the gold medal match. This game was moved until night time in Tokyo due to potential temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit — something to watch for beach volleyball, which will still take place during the day.

Golf: 6:30 PM (Thursday), Golf Channel

If you’re looking for something to watch early in the evening, the women’s golf final begins at 6:30 and goes all the way until around 3:30 Friday morning. American Nelly Korda has been dominating the tournament, especially on Thursday, when she shot a nine-under 62 to take a four-shot lead into the final round. Her sister, Jessica, is also in the field, though she is nine shots back of Nelly in a large tie for 11th.
