Josh Rosen isn’t doing much to shed his “bust” stigma.
Rosen, the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, has struggled in training camp for the 49ers, with his poor play inducing a blunt assessment from 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
“I think he started off real well,” Shanahan said on Sunday. “I think he’s taken a couple of steps back the last few practices. You know, it was unfortunate on that (interception during Sunday’s practice). We were supposed to go to someone and we had a busted route, so then it kind of fell apart and he tried to overcompensate and he made a bad situation worse.”
On draft night in 2018, Rosen proclaimed that the players selected in front of him were “nine mistakes.” As a rookie with the Cardinals, Rosen underwhelmed, tossing 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The following year, Arizona selected Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in the draft and traded Rosen. Shortly afterward, he was traded to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks.
Rosen did not appear in a game during the 2020 season, splitting time between the Buccaneers’ practice squad and the 49ers roster. He is currently battling with Nate Sudfeld for the No. 3 quarterback role behind presumed starter Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance.
