7 hikers struck by lightning on North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain

A lightning strike hit seven hikers on a trail in North Carolina Friday, injuring at least four of them.

The incident happened on Grandfather Mountain’s MacRae Peak as a fast-moving storm tore through the region around noon, according to local outlet WBTV.

Officials said all seven hikers were able to walk off the trail to an ambulance, including a person who fell and suffered a head injury, the report said.

Another hiker was reportedly burned by the lightning. The other injuries were minor, the outlet reported.

Lightning strikes kill more than 20 Americans a year and injure hundreds more, mostly in the summer, according to the National Weather Service.

The North Carolina incident came a day after a 13-year-old was killed after being struck by lightning on Orchard Beach in The Bronx. Another teen was seriously injured in the Thursday incident, and five other people were struck.

Lightning has killed at least six other people in the US this summer, according to the weather service, including a New Jersey man who was struck dead while playing golf.

According to officials, the accident happened due to a fast-moving storm on MacRae Peak at Grandfather Mountain on August 13, 2021.
