If I wasn’t bald, this Mets season would have me at losing hair.
The roller coaster ride keeps chugging along. After rock bottom following a sweep in Philly, the Mets flipped the script and swept the Nationals at Citi Field this week. They enter 13 days in hell a half game out of first place in the NL East. Staring them down is four straight series against the Dodgers and Giants, two of the best teams in baseball. Can the Mets keep their winning ways going this weekend?
To break down the sweep and look at that rough stretch ahead of them, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with former Met Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring an interview with 1969 Mets World Series champion Art Shamsky.
Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:
- HOW SWEEP IT IS: Mets badly needed to get a sweep before their tough schedule ahead. It wasn’t pretty, but they found a way to get it done. Pete Alonso backed up his talk with a big series and the walk-off homer that made up for the bullpen’s blown save and Jeff McNeil not knocking the ball down that tied the game. Trevor Williams was fantastic in his debut and needs to stay here and make spot starts and as a long man out of the bullpen. Jonathan Villar has been so important to this team and will get a nice deal from some team in the offseason.
- COMING UP: One quarter of the Mets home wins are walk-offs. Key series against the Dodgers this weekend as the Mets face some of the best pitchers in baseball. This is a true test to see what they got.

- 1969 MEMORIES: Who were the vocal leaders on that Mets team? Were you friends with the championship Jets and Knicks teams’ players? Joe Namath almost chose to play baseball.
- SMALL BALL: Only hitting home runs doesn’t win games. Mets need to play more small ball, lay down bunts, steal bases and move runners over.
