A 1-month-old boy was left in serious condition Sunday after his father smashed his head off a car seat handle in the Bronx, cops said Sunday.
Leroy Peters allegedly picked the child up so forcefully, he struck the infant’s head “on the bar above the car seat” in the family’s apartment at 285 East 171st Street on Friday morning, police said.
The baby’s mom noticed he was slumped in the car seat when Peters came to pick her up from an overnight security shift a short time later, police sources said. She tried to splash water on the child’s face but called 911 when he was unresponsive.
Peters was arrested Friday night and charged with reckless assault to a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, cops said.
Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital told cops the baby suffered a brain hemorrhage, subdural hematomas and skull fractures, according to police sources.
The child was in “grave condition” and “likely to die,” a police spokesman said, adding that the charges would be upgraded if the baby did not make it.
