Three Giants takeaways: Mixed bag for Corey Clement

Here are three Giants takeaways from their 12-7 preseason loss to the Jets on Saturday night at MetLife Stadium:

  1. The sudden retirements of Joe Looney and Zach Fulton left the Giants short on depth, as far as experienced interior offensive linemen. Kenny Wiggins, a 33-year old with 38 NFL starts, started at left guard in place of injured Shane Lemieux and struggled. The Giants may have to look elsewhere.
  2. RB Corey Clement has thus far had a solid first training camp with the Giants, showing signs he could split some of the backup time (behind Saquon Barkley once he returns to full health) with Devontae Booker. He ran the ball well (five rushes, 32 yards) but this will not help Clement: He lost the ball on a fumble on the Jets’ 3-yard line, a red-zone turnover that will not sit well with Joe Judge.
  3. Looking for a second-year player ready to make much more of an impact? Try Carter Coughlin. He was used on the edge as a rookie but a move to an inside linebacker spot seems to hit Coughlin’s sweet spot. He was extremely active in this game and showed his natural pass-rush ability with a third-quarter sack, plus a forced fumble.
