A 19-year veteran of the NYPD has died from complications of the coronavirus — the 60th member of the police department to succumb to COVID-19.
Police Officer Sony Clerge, who was assigned to the Transit Borough Manhattan Task Force, died Friday morning, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said.
“For more than 19 yrs, Police Officer Sony Clerge proudly served the people of NYC & helped keep our transit system safe,” the city’s top cop tweeted. “The hearts of the NYPD family are a bit more broken today. Sony & his family are forever in our prayers.”
Clerge’s death comes just days after the passing of another officer, Detective Shantay Neal-Baker, who succumbed to coronavirus complications Saturday.
The majority of the NYPD’s 60 coronavirus fatalities were civilian employees with the department.
Police brass have ramped up their efforts to get cops vaccinated against the virus — as the department struggles to get above a 50 percent immunization rate, even though officers were one of the first available groups to get the jab earlier this year.
A police spokeswoman said Friday that the current vaccination rate is 47 percent for the department’s just under 35,000 uniformed officers and nearly 18,000 civilian members.
Fewer than .001% of vaccinated Americans have died from breakthrough infections, suggesting immunizations are the best way to prevent deaths, according to the CDC.
Earlier this week, the NYPD rolled out new masking guidelines for unvaccinated cops, requiring them to wear face coverings at almost all times while on the job.
